GLA collaborated with the architect in the site analysis and land use study for the 178-acre property. The house was sited to minimize tree removals and soil disturbance, and to allow for a sunrise view to the east. A new drive, oriented toward the Piedmont foothills, was laid out to expose travelers to the natural and cultural features of the site, which include old farmstead walls. At the house, the gardens appear to move outward like ripples, beginning with a crisp and refined plant and material palette and fading to an increasingly naturalistic effect.
